Champaign-Urbana Bike Information
Plan your Route
Champaign County Bikes produces the C-U Area Bike Map. The map is available online in PDF format and paper copies are available at a number of locations including local bike shops.
If you aren't sure which streets will take you through to your destination, a quick look at the map may be of help. Of course you can't always see if the road is brick or not, and you often have to try the route to know for sure if you are comfortable on it.
Test out new routes over the weekend. Check the time it takes to bike to work. It may be faster than you expect. Even new riders find that it only adds a few minutes to the drive. For some the bike will be faster! You get to park very close to the door of your building.
May is Bike Month!
The League of American Bicyclists (LAB) celebrates National Bike Month in May. National Bike to Work Day 2025 will take place on Friday, May 16, 2025. Locally, we will hold our Bike to Work Day in September, after the semester begins. Click the Register tab to pre-register for this year's event.
Local Bike Shops
Your local bike shop can help get you going by either overhauling your old bike or by setting you up with a brand new one! And remember, any money you spend on your bike will be money saved on gas, oil, and parking!
The Bike Project of Urbana-Champaign
The Bike Project co-op offers a space, tools, and a community to repair bikes, share knowledge, hold classes, and advocate for bikes and bicyclists in Urbana-Champaign. Locations are in Downtown Urbana and the Campus Bike Center at 51 E. Gregory Dr. in Champaign.
Champaign County Bikes
Champaign County Bikes (CCB) is a group of citizens working together to make Champaign County the most bicycle friendly county in the Midwest. The CCB website includes a calendar, routes, links to useful information, articles, and even a few photos in the gallery.
C-U Safe Routes to School Project (C-U SRTS)
C-U Safe Routes to School Project (C-U SRTS) organizes local Walk / Bike to School Days, bike rodeos, and has helped improve cycling infrastructure and facilities via grant funding.
Prairie Cycle Club
PCC members love to ride! They also keep events highlighted so watch their site and join the club.
Champaign County Greenways & Trails
Champaign County Greenways & Trails is an effort coordinated by the Regional Planning Commission with local agencies to develop the county greenways and trails system. Existing greenways, trails, and bikeways maps can be found here.
The Law
Bicycles are vehicles and are afforded the same rights and responsibilities as motor vehicles. Remember the safest place is on the street going in the same direction as the other traffic.
Get your bike ready! Take the time to dust it off, air up, patch or replace flat inner tubes, lube the chain, adjust the brakes, etc. We can show Champaign County how easy it is for most of us to use a bicycle to get to work. Hopefully many people will find out what a pleasure it is too! More can be found here.
