BIKE TO SCHOOL DAY
Bike to School Day 2020 has changed dramatically due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Since school is currently canceled we are encouraging families to bike with their children to their school or a local park sometime during the day on May 6th. Now is a good time to identify the best route for cycling and to practice bicycle safety skills. To find the best routes to your neighborhood school you can use the C-U Safe Routes to School Maps. These maps include routes for walking or biking to school that have sidewalks and are good routes for walking or biking.
Bike to school day 2019
National Bike to School Day provides an opportunity for communities across the country to support and encourage students to be more active through walking and bicycling, teach safe bicycling behavior, and encourage drivers to watch for child cyclists and share the road appropriately. In Champaign-Urbana, Bike to School Day has been a successful event with a constant participation over the past seven years.
Bike to School Day, May 8, 2019 was a lot of fun. Urbana High School, Urbana Middle School, Yankee Ridge Elementary, Westview Elementary, and Holy Cross Elementary all registered as a part of Bike to School Day. U of I planning students, along with Cynthia Hoyle, volunteered at a joint Urbana High School/Urbana Middle School station. Healthy breakfast options were handed out as well as bike lights, reflectors, locks, and bike safety materials to participating students.
